A Stitch Through Time Before the quilting machine was created, each quilt was hand stitched together. Cave tenants strived to stay warm by wrapping themselves with animal skins; they used the advantage of joining fur together to form larger blankets. In time, one of them observed an animal bone on the terrain and thought to use it as a tool to thread together various furs. Undergoing many changes, the needle changed dramatically, from a bone to iron, from iron to steel, and from steel to other metals that lend themselves to elevated levels of modification. This caused for a setback in additional study of the sewing machine for many year s. An American named Walter Hunt was yet another innovator of the sewing machine. In 1834, he devised the machine that utilized an eye-pointed needle and a moving shuttle. Neil Schlager and Josh Lauer inform how Walter Hunt â€Å"failed to patent it at that time and when he tried later to get it registered, he was rejected on the basis of ‘product abandonment’.† Isaac Merrit Singer was the largest and most successful name in the patent pool. Ten years later, he started working at a machine shop in Boston on 1851. When he was asked to repair a sewing machine, he came up with a better machine that he sold through his own company. All of which these innovators had in common, was the fact that they were still using the needle. One of the most important yet least discussed parts of the machine is the needle. Machine needles have a hole on the same end as the point. Opposite to the needlepoint is the shank, the top of the needle, which is connected to the machine. Und erneath the needle is called the shaft. While others are completely round, the needles that have a flat side on the shank are the universal needle.
